The goal of this 2 year project is to enhance 7 wetlands in the Bonavista North region that have been degraded by human and natural causes including ATV/ORV use. Newfoundland and Labrador is the only Atlantic province without a provincial wetland map, however, Ducks Unlimited Canada has partnered with LOOKNorth, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Research and Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Environment Canada and the Canadian Center for Mapping and Earth Observation to create one.
IBEC has confirmed that the Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol (WESP) will be used in the development of the provincial map, therefore, we will also be using WESP for our field assessments so that the data collected can be contributed to the provincial wetland map. Knowing the location and type of wetlands in the Bonavista North region is a critical component to our conservation efforts as we can not protect what we do not know exists.
